When can a Yorkie puppy leave its mother? Yorkie puppies should NOT leave their mothers and the rest of the litter until they are a minimum of 8 weeks old. Most breeders recommend 10-12 weeks as a more suitable age for separation.

Although a pup can survive leaving mom at 6 - 8 weeks with careful attention, I would never let one of my pups leave home before they are at 12+ weeks. The critical period between 6 - 12 weeks is when the pups learn lifelong lessons about respect and discipline from their mother and siblings.

Yorkshire Terriers cant stay alone for the long period of time. Adult Yorkies (over 18 months) can be left alone 4-6 hours a day, while puppies (up to 18 months) can be left alone no longer than 2-3 hours a day! Remember at all times that our Yorkshire Terriers are social animals like us.

However, the question of today is when can yorkies leave their mothers or when a yorkie is mature enough to leave his mother? A Yorkie pup should stay with his mother at least until the age of 8 weeks. Weaning should be started at the age of 4-5 weeks and end around the 6th week.

It frustrates me to read a behaviour related question, to then find out that the dog was allowed to be removed from the mother and siblings before the age of 8 or 9 weeks old.

Yorkie separation anxiety is the tendency of the dogs of this breed to feel extremely stressed when their owners leave them. It is a tendency more likely to be seen in this breed. Then Yorkie might show destructive and disruptive behavior. If this happens, the owners should be worried about their pets mental health and general well-being.
