Many terriers are quick to react to teasing, and even to the normal clumsiness that comes with small children (accidental squeezing of their ears or stepping on their paw). Many terriers are possessive of their food and toys and will defend these from all comers, including children. Health problems.

Maybe youve even trained your dog to lick you or give you kisses on demand. But its been noticed that Jack Russells in particular are a breed of dog that tends to lick their owners. A lot. And if its a behavior that your own dog is displaying, you might wonder why on earth they do it so often, and if you should be worried.

Dogs lick in order to sample a flavour, for grooming and for affection. These three reasons are considered normal behaviour and it is not always possible to modify it. However in some dogs it becomes an obsession and we will then term it obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD.

If you hold your female rats, then spend time with your males, you may find that the males are far more curious than your females were. This is because the females left a scent trail behind! The males will sniff, lick, and investigate you in order to read the pheromones that the does left behind.

Behavioral reasons for why a dog licks are far more common than medical reasons.

Dogs may lick because they like the salty taste of their owner's skin, as a sign of affection, or out of habit and boredom.

Licking can also be calming or soothing, much like when people receive a relaxing massage.
