The Pinnipeds: Seals, Sea Lions, and Walruses. The word pinniped means fin or flipper-footed and refers to the marine mammals that have front and rear flippers. This group includes seals, sea lions, and walruses. These animals live in the ocean but are able to come on land for long periods of time.

Do seals like humans?

Like our cherished Assateague ponies, seals are large wild animals and can be extremely dangerous. They will bite – and serious infections can be transmitted to you or your pet. Seals are mammals, as are we. Increased contact with people eventually leads seals to habituate to humans.
