The double coat helps trap cool air next to their body while keeping the heat at bay. However, because of their often dark color, the sun can cause them to get too hot, so they must always have access to shade and water. 

Affectionate With Family? 

German Shepherds are most often known to be very affectionate with their families. They are known for their loyalty and strong bond with their owners, and they often seek out affection and attention from their family members. They thrive on social interaction and physical touch, and many enjoy being petted, cuddled, and given attention by their owners. 

Kid-friendly? 

Most German Shepherds can easily be considered to be kid-friendly. However, this can vary among individual dogs as some may be too hyperactive to be around young children or may not have the patience to tolerate children who haven’t been taught how to pet nicely.

Health and Grooming 

Though typically healthy dogs overall, German Shepherds do have some ailments that they may be more susceptible to than other dogs. And additionally, while they certainly do not need a haircut by any means, they do require frequent brushing to keep their coat in good condition. 

Shedding 

German Shepherds are heavy shedders. They have a thick, double coat that sheds year-round, with heavier shedding occurring twice a year during seasonal coat changes in the spring and fall.

Drooling

Mabel, my rescue dog, loves food. However, her regular diet typically consists of kibble. Despite being highly food-motivated, I can tell that she loses interest in regular kibble. So, I’ve been eager to try different types of food. When Ollie, a fresh dog food company that customizes personalized meals for dogs, sent us some samples, I couldn’t wait to give it a try.

Mabel’s face lit up when we received our first package from Ollie. As I unpacked the box, she sniffed around like crazy and she remained curious even after I put the food away. It was the most excited I’ve ever seen her get about dog food! Her excitement made me eager to see what she thought of the new food. Keep reading to see my Ollie customer review.

Getting Started with Ollie Dog Food

Right away, I found Ollie’s process more convenient than going to the store to buy dog food. I filled out an online questionnaire with Mabel’s info, including her weight, activity level, recipe preferences, and allergies. Mabel is a low-energy dog, so I hoped her meal plan would help her maintain a healthy weight.

Ollie offers fresh and mixed (fresh and baked) meal plans. I chose a mixed plan with Ollie’s chicken-flavored fresh and baked food since chicken is Mabel’s favorite flavor. However, they have several other flavors available:

• Fresh Food – Beef, Chicken, Turkey, Lamb
• Baked Food – Beef, Chicken

After answering all the questions, the food was shipped to my door in less than a week! Here’s my Ollie dog food review on the company’s packaging and storage.

What’s Included in the Box?

When I opened the box from Ollie, I was shocked to see all that was included. Here is everything I received:

• Feeding guide for Mabel
• Food storage container
• Measuring cup (only comes with the mixed meal plan)
• Food scooper
• Bag of the gently baked food
• Seven packages of the fresh food

The fresh food arrived frozen in an insulated package with dry ice on top of the food. It was very cold inside, so the fresh food would’ve stayed frozen even if I hadn’t brought the box inside right away. The baked food and other supplies were on top of the insulated package to prevent them from getting too cold.

Storing the Food

The box of food also came with instructions on how to store and serve it. Luckily, the gently baked food is shelf-stable and can be stored like kibble. I kept it in the same dry place that I usually keep kibble. For maximum freshness, the food should be used within 12 months. Once you open it, the bag is resealable, making it easy to store and serve.

However, the fresh food is a much different story. Ollie’s fresh food formulas are gently cooked and then flash-frozen. So, the food arrives frozen and should stay frozen until you’re ready to serve it to your furry friend. The fresh food can be stored in the freezer for up to six months.

Before serving fresh food to your dog, you should move the frozen package into the fridge and give it at least 24 hours to thaw. The “puptainer” that came with the food makes storing packages in the fridge easy, even when they’re open. Once the food is thawed, it will stay fresh for up to four days in the fridge. The process for storing Ollie’s fresh food is more complex than traditional dog food, but it didn’t take long for me to get used to a routine with this new food.

Ollie Dog Food Review: My Dog Tries Ollie for the First Time!

Mabel was excited to try Ollie for the first time even before I scooped it into her bowl. However, I didn’t want to rush into it. Even though Mabel has never had any sensitivities to food, fresh food is a drastic change from kibble. I gradually switched her to Ollie’s food by mixing some of her kibble with the new food for the first few days.

Ollie always recommends that dog parents use a gradual transition to avoid digestive issues in dogs. Here’s the process they recommend:

• Day 1-2: Add a small amount of Ollie to your dog’s current food.
• Day 3-4: Mix half of your dog’s Ollie portion with half of their current food portion.
• Day 5-6: Mix 75% of your dog’s Ollie portion with 25% of your dog’s current food.
• Day 7: Serve your dog’s full Ollie portion without any of their old food.

Step 1 – Adding Ollie Baked Dog Food

Ollie’s baked food is similar to kibble because it’s shelf-stable and can simply be poured into your dog’s bowl. However, it’s slow-cooked without preservatives to ensure that the food holds more nutrients than kibble. It’s easy to measure out because the measuring cup that came in the box has the measurements on it, so I can make sure Mabel gets the right amount.

From a distance, the gently baked food looks like any other dry dog food, but when you look closely, you can see bits of real meat, vegetables, and fruits in the food. The pieces are thinner and lighter than the kibble Mabel is used to, but she was instantly more intrigued with the flavor than she has been with any other dog food.

I started by mixing a little of the baked food with Mabel’s kibble for her first meal. I didn’t add the fresh food during the first meal because it was still thawing and I wanted to see how she would react to the baked food individually. As soon as she smelled that there was something new added to her dish, she wagged her tail like crazy and struggled to sit still for pictures next to her food dish.

Even though she went for the baked pieces first, she didn’t ignore her old food completely. Soon, her entire dish was empty as usual, but she spent some extra time licking the bowl clean.

Step 2 – Adding Ollie Fresh Dog Food

For Mabel’s next meal, I tried mixing a little of the fresh dog food with her kibble to see if her reaction would be different than the baked dog food. As soon as I opened one of the packages, she came running over, sniffing around like crazy. The fresh dog food does have a strong smell, but it’s not unpleasant.

Putting the fresh food into the bowl was messier than serving baked dog food or kibble. However, the scooper that came in the box made it easier to portion the food and move it into the bowl without getting it all over the place. When I scooped the food, a few crumbles got onto the counter, but it was much easier to clean up than I expected fresh food to be. As the name implies, Ollie’s fresh food is packed with fresh, nutrient-rich ingredients to give dogs a health boost.

As I mixed the fresh food with the kibble, Mabel couldn’t contain her excitement. The fresh food was more interesting to her than the baked food. As you can imagine, getting a nice picture of her next to the food was near impossible. Once I set her bowl on her feeding mat, she didn’t hesitate to gobble up her new food. She licked the bowl like crazy, and I don’t think she would’ve stopped licking if I hadn’t told her it was time to go outside.

Step 3 – Mixing Fresh and Baked Food

For the following meals, I mixed a little of the fresh food and the baked food with some kibble. Mabel seemed to be handling the new food well (no noticeable digestive issues), but I still wanted to be cautious for a few more days just to be safe.

Mabel gets excited about any food I give her, but there’s no doubt that the fresh food has the most appealing scent for her. Yet, she always eats all the food in her bowl, so the new food hasn’t stopped her from enjoying kibble too. However, I will need to wait until her transition period is over to give the most accurate Ollie dog food review.

Continuing to Use Ollie Dog Food

Once I was confident that Mabel’s tummy could handle the new food, I took away her kibble and fed her 100% Ollie. I’ve been giving her a mixture of the fresh and baked food as directed. The instructions that came with the products make it easy to portion her food for each meal. They say how much of each type of food she should get daily, along with how much that would be per meal if you serve two meals a day (which I do).

Mabel was in good shape for her age (she’s 9) before trying Ollie, and I’m happy to say that she still seems as healthy on the new diet. Her stools are still solid and she has maintained a healthy weight. After meals, she seems more playful and affectionate than before. I’m not sure if that’s health-related or if it’s just her being excited about the food. Either way, both Mabel and I are pleased with the results.

Thanks to the Nautilus Exploration Program’s research vessel, the E/V Nautilus, and its remote-operated underwater vehicles, anyone with love for the marine world can catch live streams of their expeditions and the fascinating creatures these glimpses yield. One clip from a spin off the central California coast in the deep water of the Pacific Ocean revealed saltwater paydirt.

Captured together in one scene, a jellyfish, a flatfish, a shark, and a Flapjack Octopus can be seen just going with the current of underwater life. But it’s the little octopus drawing all the attention because it’s just so darn cute!

The Cutest Little Cephalopod

Known by the nickname adorabilis because it’s one cute cephalopod, the Flapjack is part of a grouping known as umbrella octopuses for their comparable shape. These umbrellas are also called the “Dumbo” because of their flappy fins that look much like elephant ears. And the Dumbo in this capture from the E/V Nautilus shows us how that name rings true.

Zooming in on the little yellow cutie, one of the explorers asked, “Did you know the brain is wrapped around the esophagus?”

This, of course, led to jokes about thinking and eating, but also the revelation these octopuses can’t eat anything too large or “they will explode their brain.”

And as the explorer shares that scary bit, tiny Dumbo seems to be reacting to her words, squinching its eyes shut and then wrapping its fat tentacles over its head to hide from such a dreadful fate!

Really though, the octopus is reacting to the bright light on the remote vehicle. This little squish is used to darker conditions on the bottom of the ocean floor! But once it realizes some big weird thing is looking, Dumbo throws its arms over its head to hide in plain sight. How incredibly adorable!

How Did This Cutie Get Its Name?

And let’s go back to that nickname of adorabilis. How did such a perfect moniker for a creature so, well, adorable come about?

The Monterey Herald explains the name idea came about as a joke when Stephanie Bush, a postdoctoral fellow at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, was tasked with identifying the eight-legged cutie pie.

“I thought that since this animal is so adorable, I should name it adorabilis,” joked Stephanie. “I’m supposed to be this really serious stoic scientist, but I’m still human. It’s just so cute.”

And because it’s just so cute, we couldn’t help learning more about the Dumbo, so enjoy these fun facts about the Flapjack Octopus:

• The Flapjack’s scientific name is Opisthoteuthis californiana.
• They have a lifespan of 1½ – 2½ years.
• The Flapjack lives in the deep ocean and loves chilling in soft mud.
• They’re carnivores who enjoy snacking on worms and small invertebrates.
• Flapjack and other umbrella octopuses can’t “ink” like other species.
• The webbing between their tentacles makes umbrella octopuses look like their namesake as they float to the ocean floor.
• Their reddish pigments help them avoid detection from predators as red colors appear “dark” in the deep sea.

Separation Anxiety Facts…

Despite it being the no.1, go-to piece of advice, only two kinds of separation anxiety can actually be helped by gradually building up time alone! If your dog gets anxious enough to chew, scratch, toilet, or cry continuously, when you leave him, he is in a panicked state. While he’s like this, he won’t ever realise he is safe enough to get better. In fact, the more he repeats this behaviour, the more likely he will get worse.

None of the main causes of separation problems are caused by too much love and attention! True story. Dogs need to bond with their pack, human or otherwise, to feel safe. In fact, medications that work particularly well for separation anxiety (Zylkene for example) simulates the bond a pup has with their mum. So please, feel free to hug your dog as much as you want, and share you bed with them – if you wish!

Chewing can help to relieve anxiety. Wood, fabric, and leather can be particularly satisfying to an anxious dog. That’s why they love your sofa, shoes and door frames. Door frame chewing can also be connected to frustration based separation anxiety!

Get a crate, they said…

Only two kinds of separation anxiety will be improved with the introduction of a crate. One will be made dramatically worse, three could go either way, and three won’t be affected at all! Crates can make great safe spaces for dogs. But those that suffer with frustration related issues will hate being trapped in a crate. As will those that have very severe symptoms or toilet when left alone.

When dogs become anxious the bladder and bowel are affected, so if you come home to an puddle, you can be sure he had no choice – it’s just biology. A crate could make this experience particularly awful for a dog that is affected in this way.

Only two kinds of separation anxiety might get better with the introduction of extra toys (the other most common bit of go-to advice), but one will get significantly worse. Extra toys are great for dogs that are bored. But, if your dog is hyper or can’t settle himself then toys will make things worse. Either that, or they will just distract the dog for a while, and then they’ll get stressed when they have finished with their toy.

All nine separation related problems have different causes but in each case the dog goes into into survival mode. Survival mode affects a dogs pain threshold, making it easy for them for chew their way out of crates. It also shuts down their rest and digest system which means they won’t eat, drink, or rest while they feel that way.

It’s not their fault…

Dogs don’t punish their owners with their anxious behaviour. They aren’t being defiant either. Anxiety switches their thinking brain off. So they have no power over these behaviours, and couldn’t stop them any more than a person could stop a panic attack.

Only one kind of separation anxiety can be helped with a remote treat dispenser, or talking to your dog through a camera! If your dog suffers from frustration then this is likely to make things worse.

Only one kind of separation anxiety can be permanently solved by focusing on the separation problem alone! The other eight all need extra support by working on the dogs general routine and behaviour outside of the separation time. This could be working on separation anxiety triggers, reducing frustration, helping them to settle themselves, implementing a safe space, improving pack relationships either with humans or other pets, stopping the use of a conflicting technique, solving other anxiety triggers, and about a million other possible things.

Can they settle themselves?

Dogs that don’t know how to settle themselves may not fully recover from separation anxiety! So make sure to spend time working on that while you work on the anxiety itself.

Some kinds of separation anxiety occur in only one specific situation. For example, many dogs can be left alone in cars, other houses, or campervans, with no problem. Some can even cope really well at different times of the day!

Often it is one particular member of the family that the anxiety is connected to. It won’t matter who else is with the dog, they’ll still worry when that specific person leaves them. And it’s not just at home. This could happen if they pop into a shop for a moment, or leave the car momentarily.

Three kinds of separation anxiety in dogs can only be diagnosed by a full behavioural assessment. The underlying cause will not show in the dogs behaviour when alone. And, if undiscovered, the dogs overall behaviour and confidence will suffer. As will your behaviour training results. Conflicting training techniques are a big cause, as is redirected or displaced anxiety, and trauma.

Be careful who you get advise from

If your dog has separation related problems, please only take advice from someone that understands the difference between the different types, and how to solve them. The wrong advice could cause additional stress to your dog, and be a waste of your time and money!

Especially be wary of anyone that tells you that you have caused the problem by spoiling your dog, or by letting them on your sofa/bed. Or if they suggest gradually increasing the dogs time alone without checking for triggers, related behaviours, or fully investigating and watching the behaviour either in person or via a remote camera.

American Bulldogs were the most stolen breed in 2022, with the number more than quadrupling compared to the year before (up 350 per cent). Staffordshire Bull Terriers and French Bulldogs were also popular targets for dognappers, with the former seeing a 610 per cent year on year increase. French Bulldogs saw thefts rise by 31 per cent compared to the prior year.

The number of dogs stolen overall in 2022 has decreased by 22 per cent compared to 2,760 dogs in 2021, suggesting that changes to post-pandemic working patterns and a tightening of average household incomes may have reduced overall demand for dogs. The drop in demand is further evidenced by an increase in the number of dogs being rehomed. Between 1 January and 31 October 2022, Dogs Trust saw a 50 per cent increase in inquiries regarding dog rehoming compared to the same period in 2021.

Beverley Cuddy, publisher of Dogs Monthly, patron of Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance, and founder of the Bark Angel, comments, “Although reported dog theft numbers may be going down to pre-pandemic levels, the reality is that a significant number of cases still go unreported. Coupled with the rise in people using dog walkers, multiple dogs could be stolen at one time. Only one crime reference number is assigned when this happens, so we believe the scale of the problem is likely to be much bigger.”

With 396 dog thefts reported by the Metropolitan Police in 2022, London is once again the dog theft capital, having topped the list since Direct Line began analysing theft rates in 2015. Kent Police saw the second largest number of reported thefts, recording 177 dogs stolen in 2022, while West Yorkshire saw the third largest, receiving reports of about 130 dogs stolen in 2022. West Midlands and Lancashire Constabulary received 125 and 103 respectively.

Over the past eight years, Leicestershire Constabulary has seen the biggest increase in thefts, with 75 stolen in 2022 compared to 24 in 2015. Dog thefts have also risen significantly in the West Midlands, and Devon and Cornwall.

Madeline Pike, veterinary nurse for Direct Line Pet Insurance comments, “We remain a nation of dog lovers. As more than a third (34 per cent) of UK households own a dog, the opportunity for thieves is high, with six dogs stolen each day in 2022. Whilst there has been a decrease in the number of dogs stolen, animal shelters have seen a sharp rise in the number of pets being rehomed. This is likely to be a sign that households are struggling with the cost of living or that they can no longer give their pet the attention they need due to a change in their working patterns.

“Taking precautions such as not leaving your dog tied up outside a shop, in an empty vehicle or keeping it on the lead when in busy areas, will help reduce the likelihood of being targeted by thieves. It’s also vital to make sure your dog is microchipped and that your contact details are up to date. This can help identify your dog if it does go missing and is found.”

• Firstly, check the local area and your dog’s favourite spots in case the dog has wandered off
• Engage the local community and make your dog ‘too hot to handle’ by sharing with local groups, putting up posters, informing local media and using social media – include pictures and any distinctive markings

• Report your dog as stolen to the police and provide them with as much detail as possible

The trip of a lifetime, starting in Inverness, take the meandering coastal roads along the northernmost mainland of Scotland. This is a great road trip for the dogs and for you, with dog friendly beaches along the way to blow away the cobwebs.

See Ardvreck castle, Dunrobin castle, beautiful Balnakeil beach, Smoo cave, Chanonry Point (and maybe spot a dolphin!) and Brims Ness.

At 516 miles, this drive is most certainly going to take more than a day so make sure you’ve pre booked some dog friendly accommodation en route.

8. Road to the Isles

Explore the West Highlands from Fort William to the port of Mallaig. This quiet, 43 mile route through wild landscapes and on to white sandy beaches gives you a real taste of what Scotland is all about, without having to travel the full length and breadth of the country.

For history buffs, see Jacobean sites of significance or, for Harry Potter fans, visit some of the film locations. You will also find the deepest loch, Loch Morar where you might spot a glimpse of Nessie’s cousin, Morag.

9. South West Coastal 300

The scenic 300 mile route through Scotland’s south west takes you past some special attractions. The Southerness lighthouse is the second oldest in Scotland and a sight to behold.
