You aren't likely to see a shaved Irish Wolfhound as it's not recommended to clip the coat. If you don't keep up with the several times per week brushing regimen, your dog will need to be stripped. You can either buy a stripping tool that will rake out the hair or you can take them to the groomer for professional hand stripping.

It is not usually necessary to bathe a wolfhound often, but only if he gets particularly dirty or has rolled in something unpleasant. Use shampoos specifically intended for dogs; do not use human shampoos as the acidity of the skin of people and dogs is different and altering it by using the wrong shampoo can cause skin infection.

The wolfhound does not need a vast amount of grooming but does require brushing regularly and a thorough going over once a week. Some hounds do have rather long, soft coats and these will obviously take much more work. For the show ring the hound should just be tidied up, not stripped out, except when removing old, dead coat.

Irish wolfhounds rarely need baths and a bath twice a year will suffice (unless their coat develops an odor). The breed does shed throughout the year, but brushing the coat weekly will help prevent excess hair from falling out uncontrollably. Even though Irish wolfhounds are enormous dogs, they are a house dog at heart.

Trimming/thinning the hair of the feet, around the neck, beard and eyebrows can also be done as necessary. Bathing every 6 weeks (or as needed) with a canine shampoo specifically for harsh coats, otherwise, it may make the coat too soft.

Typical Irish Wolfhounds do not require a great deal of grooming but at least once per week they should be brushed out and a check done to ensure all is well with regards to nails, ears, teeth, etc. I use a pin brush on mine, but not a slicker brush as it is too firm and scratches the dog.

Irish Wolfhound Coat Care. Irish Wolfhound grooming includes coat care such as: Brushing with a undercoat rake and pin brush a minimum of once a week. Trimming the area between the paw pads, around the anus and genitals every 4-6 weeks. Trimming/thinning the hair of the feet, around the neck, beard and eyebrows can also be done as necessary.

With the puppy, take off a little shaving only too much and you may cut into the quick and cause the nails to bleed. To stop the bleeding, use cornstarch, a styptic pencil (such as men use for shaving) or Quick Stop a clotting powder. You will know when your dog needs a bath, normally only once or twice a year.
