Many Catahoula Leopard Dogs are dominant and pushy toward other dogs of the same sex. Many have strong instincts to chase and seize cats and other fleeing creatures. Keep in mind that this breed was (and is) used to hunt other animals, including aggressive wild boar.

Catahoula Leopard Dog Historically, because of their size and strength, this dog was used for hunting deer and other large game. More recently they have been used as herding dogs for cattle and wild hogs. They are best suited to a working role on a farm.

Your Catahoula will need at least an hour of physical exercise a day. They make a great companion for an active pet parent who enjoys running, hiking or long walks. But because of their aggression toward other dogs and their tendency to chase small animals, they may not be the best candidates for dog parks, and they should never be allowed off leash.

Working and hunting are what the Catahoula does best. I have seen Catahoulas used for everything including retrieving ducks. The Catahoula works cattle from the head, rather than the heel. It has been stated that the Catahoula can outwork any other breed performing the same tasks.

Catahoulas are used as bay dogs, tree dogs, and for hunting a variety of wild game, including small game such as raccoons and squirrels, as well as big game such as deer, mountain lions and bear. [better source needed] They are also used for scent trailing game, and as a search and rescue dog.

Catahoulas are intelligent and independent but loyal to their owners and family. They're territorial and protective, so they make good watchdogs. The downside to these qualities is that Catahoulas are not exactly friendly dogs. They can be cautious and aloof with strangers, including children they don't know.

The Catahoula was initially used for hunting. Native Americans tended to use the dog for hunting large game. European settlers used the dog for hunting and herding livestock. The first white settlers in Louisiana are believed to have used the dog to hunt feral pigs in the swamps of Louisiana.

Also called the Catahoula Hog Dog, they are used as stock dogs, bay dogs, tree dogs, watchdogs, guard dogs, and of course as loyal companions.
