Staffordshire Bull Terriers share a common ancestry with Bull Terriers and as such they have a similar build. It is generally accepted that Staffies came about by crossing the Bulldog with the Black and Tan terrier with the end goal being to create a strong and courageous fighting and bull baiting dog at a time when both blood sports were extremely popular during the 19th Century.

Like all the bull breeds, the Staffordshire bull terrier can trace its heritage back to the ancient Molossian war dogs of the Greeks. The Mollossians in turn gave rise to the great Mastiffs of Europe, and then to the family of dogs bred to bait bulls and other animals.

The name of the breed was revised on January 1, 1969, to American Staffordshire Terrier to distinguish it from the British Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a separate breed from the Bull-type terrier group, recognized in England in 1935. The AKC opened the AmStaff Stud Book to UKC dogs a few more times until the 1970s.
