The Kombai comes in one primary color, brown. There are two rare Kombai dogs. The Pulicharal Kombai which is brindle, and the Porru Kombai dog which is piebald. The muzzle of the dog is black. They come in single-dense-coat that is uniform and not patchy. The hair on the tail should be smooth.

It has some black coloring on its feet and ears and dark coloring along its back. The more similar colors of red, brown, and tan with a black muzzle are called Karuvaisevalai or Karumunjinaai in the Tamil language. Less common coat colors are piebald and brindle. In the Tamil language, Piebald is called Porru, and brindle is called Pullisaral.

The most popular color is Redtan and dark brown Tan with black mask in Face or black snout and black misting or clouding in feet, and tail and a light tan saddle in the side of the withers and a black or dark pigmrnted line from head to tail on back.This is the prized version of kombai. However red and tan dogs without black snouts and a brindle version called PULICHARAL is also found.
