When your dog was younger, you likely visited your veterinarian regularly for de-worming and vaccinations. Dont slack off as your dog grows older. You should already be using year-round heartworm prevention and good flea and tick products. Fleas and ticks are ubiquitous external parasites that demand control.

At least 3 doses, given between 6 and 16 weeks of age. 2 doses, 3-4 weeks apart. Puppies need a booster 1 year after completing the initial series, then all dogs need a booster every 3 years or...

But many dog owners seem to be under the impression that core vaccines are required that theyre a legal obligation. Theyre not! NOTE: The only vaccination required by law is rabies (every three years in most US states and some Canadian provinces), after an initial vaccination and one year booster, so dont let your vet tell you otherwise.

Your vet is likely to recommend Bordetella and Leptospirosis vaccines, as well as Lyme if you live in a high tick area. All of these vaccines carry a high risk for your dog and dont work very well. Check the vaccine issues listed on the chart, and also consider these points before vaccinating your dog.

A puppys recommended vaccine administration throughout this timeframe includes distemper, two rabbis shots, and two DHPP shots. This schedule, however, doesnt include non-core vaccines. Once a dog reaches adulthood, the list of annual shots is more manageable.

Vaccination against canine cough includes bordetella and parainfluenza vaccines. These diseases are respiratory infections and as such are transmitted from dog to dog. Boarding facilities, dog shows, dog classes, and parks where dogs play are all potential risks. Dogs exposed to these environments should be vaccinated yearly.

Puppies should receive their first vaccinations at eight weeks old, and its common for them to have these via the breeder; always check your puppys vaccination history before you take them home. They should then receive their second set of vaccinations at 12 weeks, and their third at 16 weeks.
