Service animals are dogs (and in some cases, miniature horses) trained to perform major life tasks to assist people with physical disabilities. Service animals are sometimes referred to as assistance animals, assist animals, support animals, or helper animals depending on the country and the animals function.

Dogs that are not trained to perform tasks that help those with a disability, including dogs used purely for emotional support, are not classified as service animals. The rule also allows trained miniature horses as alternatives to dogs, but only if they: 1. Are housebroken. Are under the owner's control.

Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the persons disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.

The ADA makes a distinction between psychiatric service animals and emotional support animals. If the dog has been trained to sense that an anxiety attack is about to happen and take a specific action to help avoid the attack or lessen its impact, that would qualify as a service animal.
