The traditional age for puppies to leave their mom and littermates and go to their new home has been eight weeks of age. At eight weeks of age most puppies are able to eat well, no longer need to nurse or eat supplemental formula, are mobile, and are aware of their world.

And this is true whether youre adopting a puppy for your family or for puppies wholl go on to become service or guide dogs.

Most professional breeders of pedigree dogs will not allow their pups to go to their new homes until they are twelve weeks old, although some breeders see eight weeks as a fair time to allow the puppies to leave, and taking home a puppy at eight weeks old is not uncommon.

When can a puppy leave its mother? So when can puppies leave their mom? Eight weeks is a great age to bring your puppy home. The benefits are worth the wait. Can puppies leave mother at 5 weeks? The answer is that theyre still far too immature, physically and psychologically, to leave their mother. Can puppies leave mother at 6 weeks?

In general, most breeders agree that the proper time to remove a puppy from its mother is when it is between six and 10 weeks old, although other breeders narrow this period to the seven- to eight-week period. However, almost all studies point to the importance of removing a puppy from its mother at the proper time.
