Avoid small, delicate bones from small animals such as chicken and other poultry, as these may be sharp and prone to splintering in the same way that cooked bones can. Raw chicken necks, however, are safe to feed, and one of the main component parts of the raw food diet for many dogs.

Its okay to give your dog large, raw, cow bones or bison bones. The bone must be big enough so that your dog cannot attempt to swallow it, and it must be raw, so that it will not splinter....

Not all experts agree that they are safe, but they are comprised mainly of cartilage and soft bones. Therefore, they may be considered digestible when raw. However, raw food also comes with risks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that between Nov. 1, 2010 and Sept. 12, 2017, it received accounts of 90 dogs who became sick after eating commercially-available smoked or baked bone treats. Fifteen of the dogs died. Raw bones are generally safer than cooked, but again, the devil is in the details.

Raw bones are also an excellent source of minerals and vitamins. However, raw bones may contain bacteria that cause food-borne disease, so talk with your vet about how to handle the bones safely to prevent illness in you and your dog. Bone size: Opt for large, thick bones rather than small or narrow bones.

Give large breeds, such as German Shepherd Dogs, Bloodhounds, and Mastiffs, large bones. Bones should be larger than the length of the dogs muzzle, so they cant be swallowed whole.
