Why chocolate is toxic for dogs. Chocolate is toxic for dogs for a few reasons. It's made of caffeine and theobromine, a chemical compound that's a bitter alkaloid from a cacao plant. Both of these components can rouse your dog's nervous system as well as speed up his heart rate, both of which are not good for your dog.

Obviously, sugar isnt fantastic for dogs. But some of the darker chocolates (and baking chocolate) dont contain much if any. So why dont dogs and chocolate mix? Two chemicals WE can process without a problem, but dogs CANT: theobromine and caffeine. And you find both of them in EVERY form of chocolate. Methylxanthines

The substances affect the nervous system and can increase heart rate, stimulate urination, cause vomiting and diarrhea, and make an animal restless. So why can humans eat chocolate, but animals cant? Dogs cannot metabolize theobromine and caffeine as well as humans can.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs because it contains theobromine and to a lesser extent, caffeine. Humans metabolize theobromine easily, but dogs don't. Dogs process theobromine and caffeine slowly, which allows these toxic compounds to build up in their systems and cause clinical signs associated with chocolate toxicity.

Theobromine, a caffeinelike molecule that increases blood flow to the brain, is so hard for
dogs
to process that they
can
easily
eat
enough to be poisonous. Few
dogs eat
fatal amounts of
chocolate
, but smaller doses
can
still cause seizures and other symptoms.

Although we humans devour chocolate, it contains toxic substances called methylxanthines, specifically theobromine, which are stimulants. Just a little bit of chocolate can cause diarrhea and vomiting in dogs, while too much can cause seizures, irregular heart function and even death. Keep all chocolate off the table.
