Doberman Pinschers are one of the more than fifty breeds of dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club that have traditionally had their tails docked. Like other dogs with working histories, the tails were often docked to help prevent the tails from experiencing injuries on the job.

The Dobermann's natural tail is fairly long, but individual dogs often have a short tail as a result of docking, a procedure in which the majority of the tail is surgically removed shortly after birth.

Dobermans bred to be show dogs have their ears cropped and tails docked, creating the general idea that the breed is supposed to have this done. However, there are no medical reasons to have this done, and plenty of reasons not to have this done. Obviously, it opens the possibility of infection.

The American Kennel Club standard for Doberman Pinschers includes a tail docked near the 2nd vertebra. Tails were originally docked on a lot of dogs because of a few reasons; They believed that the tail could increase disease infection. If a dog gets something on it's tail then puts the tail in its mouth etc.

Best answers. The ears are cropped and tails docked so that they achieve the upright standing ear and the short tail. Many of those same countries have exceptions to allow cropping and docking on dogs meant to do working sport/competition such as Schutzhund. The Doberman is the ONLY breed bred for personal protection.

Short Sleek Coat: Their sleek short coats certainly makes the dog more difficult to hold onto or control in a fight. Docked Tail: Their natural tails are long, thin, and prone to breaking. Thes tail also provides another way for a potential attacker to get ahold of the dog.

Here's the long and short of it. Historically, tail docking was thought to prevent rabies, increase a dog's speed, and prevent injuries. For hunting and herding breeds, tails could collect burrs and foxtails, causing pain and infection. The longer tails of herding dogs could also be caught in gates behind livestock.
