If you notice, stray dogs dig holes in the ground to contour their body, thus making themselves comfy. Your dog loves you. Naturally, being in the same spot gives him instant gratification on two counts.

Dogs might roll around in the poop of others because it masks their scent. In the wild, this would be beneficial to dogs because it would throw predators off their trail. It could also mask their scent to potential prey as well. Another theory is that the dog isn't trying to get a scent on them, but to put their scent on the ground.

Sitting in your spot when you get up shows your dog's affection for you, but the chosen spot comes back to the master with no unwanted behavior.

Your dog may also feel the need to protect you and sitting in your spot gives him the edge over the other animals in the household.

The question is, why does my dog sit in my spot, and can it be corrected if need be? When your dog sits in your spot he is taking in the scent you left behind. Your unique scent brings him joy and comfort. Your dog also steals the spot because it is warm. With the combination of warmth and your smell, it makes a perfect spot for him to sit on.

Some dogs will sit in "your spot" on the sofa or even roll around all over your sofa as a way to spread their scent and show that you belong to them. When they don't feel that is enough, they move to sitting on you. Most dog parents don't think much of this behavior at first, but it's important to notice if this behavior is happening in a pattern.
