When a car or bike or child on a skateboard whiz by a dog, their prey instinct can be triggered, and they are off to the races.

When dogs see something that is "running away" from them, their natural instinct is to chase it down.

But just because the urge to chase is natural, does not mean the behavior is OK.

There are a few reasons why a dog may chase your bike. Some dogs
are attracted to the motion, commonly herding dogs chase for this
reason (think Border Collies or Australian Shepherds). In this
case, the dog is usually attracted to other items in motion like
cars or people on roller blades, people running, or other dogs and
animals that run. Other dogs are chasing out of aggression in a
territorial mode, or could be fearfully aggressive about having a
"threat" near them in general. Some dogs may be bored, and a bike
or car going by is something to entertain themselves with. In all
of these cases, training and exercise can help a dog overcome its
desire to chase bikes.
