The reason dogs protect their noses from handling is that they are especially sensitive to touch.

The nose is made of mucus glands that are harmed by drying or agitation.

dogs protect their noses like we shade our eyes from harmful sunlight.

  • Worst case, those sensitive mucus glands absorb some harmful bacteria and you cause an infection. These kinds of things can be easily avoided if you simply don't touch their nose. A canine who doesn't want to be touched, but is anyway, could react aggressively. This, again, is a built in defense mechanism.
