Acquired shunts typically develop when blood pressure within the veins connecting the digestive tract to the liver becomes elevatedmost often because of diseases that cause liver scarring (cirrhosis). Dogs with acquired liver shunts tend to experience symptoms when they are older in comparison to those diagnosed with congenital shunts.

Many different conditions can lead to acute liver failure in dogs. Poisoning and infection are some of the most common issues that will trigger a sudden illness. Many endocrine imbalances affect the liver, and cancer or chronic inflammation can slowly destroy tissue.

The most common sign that a dog has a liver shunt is stunted growth. Runts of the litter are often diagnosed with liver shunts since this problem causes issues with nutrient break down from food. These small puppies may also be quieter or more reserved than their counterparts due to the issues with energy regulation.

If your dog has high levels of poisonous substances in the body, due either to direct poisoning, very strong medication or inappropriate diet, his liver might fail filtering them and might even shut down.

Causes of
Liver Failure
in
Dogs
Acute
liver failure
is most often caused by infectious agents or toxins, poor flow of fluids into the
liver
and surrounding tissues (perfusion), hypoxia (inability to breathe), drugs or chemicals that are destructive to the
liver
(hepatotoxic), and excess exposure to heat.

Poisoning: if the dog ingests something toxic, these toxins can overwhelm the liver and cause it to shut down. Lifestyle: if the dog does not live a healthy life, many factors will deteriorate their well-being with liver failure being one of them.

The liver is the largest organ in both dogs and humans. Because of this, the body depends on the liver to function properly and to help other organs with their regular processing. Unfortunately, when the liver is damaged, a plethora of side effects can spring off and cause other more severe issues to occur within the body as well.

As the liver stops doing its job, toxins begin to build up in your dogs body, causing these neurologic effects. The liver also makes blood clotting factors when it is healthy. Once in end-stage liver failure, another risk to your dog is losing blood since they cannot make blood clots properly.

In a dog with signs of a liver shunt, a complete blood count, liver enzyme analysis, and a bile acid test are the starting points for diagnosis. Dogs with shunts are commonly anemic, have elevated liver enzymes, and extreme elevation in bile acids.
