It can also be due to anxiety and a host of other causes.

Any vet will tell you this.

After drinking water some dogs will lick things with a salt, like skin.

It could be sign of stress or anxiety.

Why does my dog lick the couch after drinking water? There’s no better way to show affection than licking. Your pooch licks the couch after drinking water for much the same reason that they lick you – because it smells like their favorite person. Keep in mind if your pup is snacking on leftover food left behind by other visitors, too.

Bored dogs often lick and chew items around the house because they are looking for stimulation. So that’s the short answer, but we need to break it down a little to try to ascertain why your dog is licking the couch and sofa. Some dogs do it after drinking water, some love the feel of suede and microfibers.

Dogs use their mouths to experience the things and world around them and licking the couch can simply be because of that. If you notice that your dog is starting to chew up things and lick furniture all around the house, it can simply be because your dog has a lot of unused energy.

Well, if your dog licks and licks and doesn’t stop even if you redirect her, there’s a good chance it’s an obsessive disorder. She will lick obsessively, and especially when stressed. Be sure to speak with your veterinarian right away if your dog is showing signs of obsessional behavior.

This might be a habit which your pet is accustomed to, maybe after a meal or when they are bored which in time becomes a habit. This could be classed as stereotypy, which is a repetition of something. If your dog usually licks the crumbs on the floor after eating, then every time they finish eating, they lick the floor.

Why Do Dogs Lick People? Dr. Megan Maxwell, a certified-applied animal behaviorist, says to pay attention to timing when a dog licks you or someone in your household. The situation at hand can be very informative. “Sometimes, it’s nothing more than sensory stimulation. If a dog licks you right when you come out of the shower, it’s because you’re wet or because the lotion you just put on smells good,” says Dr. Maxwell.

Your dog probably singled out the couches, carpet and beds for "acceptable" reasons before the behavior became obsessive or compulsive, and it has since escalated. The most likely explanations are that your pooch is under-stimulated, under-socialized or experiencing stress and anxiety.

The cause could be that it is thirsty or hungry. This is because the wall might have some moisture on it or because there is something such as food or drink stuck on the wall. This would be more likely if it does it more when it does not have access to water, it has not eaten for a while and if it does it more on a certain spot on the wall.

Dental pain or injury may also cause air licking. Your vet will perform a physical exam and may draw blood for testing.
