Anxiety, Fear, or Nervousness. The next normal reason for panting is if a dog is anxious, fearful, or nervous. Panting is a normal reaction. As part of the fight or flight response, the body prepares itself for having to either fight or run away.

Cushings disease is a hormonal imbalance that occurs primarily in middle aged and older dogs. It is caused by the overproduction of cortisone (steroids) by the adrenal glands. One of the earliest and most common symptoms of this disease is excessive and inappropriate panting.

Panting in older dogs is more common than in younger ones. Any dogs that are between eight to fifteen years old may suffer this. The panting may be indicative of cognitive changes. In addition to increased panting, your older dog can also be seen pacing, bumping into things and circling.

Some dogs start to bark or growl for no apparent reason or at inappropriate times. Such behavior canbe due to anxiety, or to cognitive dysfunction syndrome; a condition resembling Alzheimer's disease in humans. As your dog ages, her senses begin to wane, and she can become increasingly anxious about her surroundings.

Congestive heart failure The most serious condition that causes excessive panting is congestive heart failure. My senior dog Red has a few heart problems, so Im always on alert if she starts to pant for no apparent reason. In her case if she pants due to prolonged stress, like being restrained for a test at the vet, her tongue will turn blue.

Medicine. Medications, especially prednisone or other steroids, may cause increased panting even when your dog is not hot, excited, or stressed. This is a common side effect, and if your dogs panting is excessive, you should talk with your vet.
