It is also possible that there is something about his penis that is bothering him such as an infection, a foreign object stuck in the sheath or a wound. This is definitely something for which a veterinary exam is a good idea. The vet may have to sedate the dog, although some tolerate it well.

There are a few things that can cause a dog to lick his penis obsessively. The first possibility is if he has some type of wound on the penis. (The wound could be inside of the sheath so you may not be able to see it.) If this is the case, it will eventually heal, but would heal faster with some anti-inflammatory medication.

Your veterinarian can also examine the prepuce (sheath around the penis) and penis itself to make sure there is not a specific reason for the extra attention to this area. I hope this information helps.

Pet UTI Prevention Formula --sometimes pets are licking their genitals because it is sore or painful--this is often due to bacteria accumulating in the urinary tract. By using the PET UTI Prevention formula which contains cranberry, d-mannose and other herbs, you are helping to keep the bacteria moving.

Causes of Licking Genitals in Male Dogs In males, abnormal preputial discharge can result in excessive licking. Preputial discharge is any substance emanating (flowing) from the prepuce (the fold of skin that covers the penis). Preputial discharge may consist of blood, urine or pus.

A dog will lick his penis to help keep it clean, and probably also just because it feels good. Some dogs will lick or self-stimulate in other ways to the point where they get erections, even if they are neutered. It’s best to simply ignore this behavior unless you also notice problems with your dog’s penis or changes in his overall health.

It is CRITICAL that you keep your pet from doing this, or you could be facing a lot of problems post-op. Sometimes, our furry friends lick because the place feels weird or tastes interesting. Or they may lick because it hurts (in the first few days) or because it itches (as we approach days 5-7).

Replied on 04/19/2011 For a one year old dog, licking his penis could be just a normal grooming behavior. However, the yellow colored discharge, penile irritation and lethargy are not normal. This could be an infection, or the penis may be normal and the lethargy may be related to another illness.

My dog was neutered today. I bought him a cone to help keep him from licking during the day, but it's too uncomfortable for him to lay down in his cage at night. Is there a home remedy or something I can put on or around it to keep

Does a blue tattooing on a dog mean?

No, rawhide does not dissolve in the dog's stomach. In fact, the opposite is true — the rawhide swells up. Far from being broken down, rawhide forces your dog to pass the pieces they swallow, making for a risk of bowel blockage.
