If you are a dog owner, it’s likely no secret to you why dogs make great companions. For millennia, dogs have been man’s best friend around the globe—as a matter of fact, in 2018 there were 470 million pet dogs worldwide, making them the number one pet in the world.
On the other hand, the rest of you without dogs may be left scratching your heads and wondering what the big deal is. In other words, “Why is the world so crazy about dogs?”
Simply put, these winsome wonder-pets provide delightful companionship in many areas of our lives.
The definition of companionship refers to company, friendship, or the state of being with someone in a friendly way.
As an illustration, my Chiweenie, Charlie, keeps me company from the moment I wake in the morning until I lay down at night. In fact, many nights he sleeps in the bed with us, pressed up against my legs like my own personal heater. It’s his favorite place to sleep.
When I get up in the morning, Charlie prances around my feet while I prepare his food, then follows me outside to eat while I relax on the porch. In fact, if I stand up to do anything or go anywhere, Charlie is right beside me!
No matter the activity—on a walk, while doing chores or working on my computer, fixing meals, watching a movie or reading a book—you guessed it, Charlie’s favorite place is at my side. And he’s nearly always happy. He lifts my mood with his charm!
What’s not to love? His happiness is contagious.
Love, Love, Love
Even a Scrooge Loves a Dog
As a matter of fact, the grumpiest of people are often transformed into blithering idiots around friendly dogs—simpering and crooning and carrying-on like they’re the oldest of friends, reunited.
Have you had the pleasure of witnessing such behavior? It’s magical. And if you have a puppy, even better!
I’m not quite sure where the magic comes from, but it’s gotta be somewhere inside your dog. It’s the only reasonable explanation.
Dogs Make Great Companions for Play and Exercise
Exercise enthusiasts across the globe take their dogs with them walking, running, hiking, camping, beach combing, surfing—whatever the activity, dogs seem delighted to keep their owners company while sharing in their favorite sport.
Are you having a tough time finding someone to exercise with? Take your dog with you. Not only will you have more fun, but you’re likely to meet some people along the way because they want to stop and pet your dog!
Moreover, if you feel threatened, your dog will sense it and likely turn into your protector. It’s a win-win.
Maybe you just want to get outside and move your body. Your dog will likely love a game of fetch or Frisbee. Exercise doesn’t have to be complicated! Simply enjoy your dog’s company in the great outdoors.
Not the Exercise Type?
On the other hand, not all of us are fitness buffs. Still, we might like someone to hang out with us as we go about our day.
I have a friend whose dog begs to ride along with her on errands, keeping her and her daughter company while they’re out.
Another friend has a dog stroller and takes her pet wherever she can use the stroller. She also has some sort of contraption for securing her dog in a shopping cart. They love shopping together!
When our friends and us gather at my house for a night of dinner and cards, they bring their dog, Sadie, and have since she was a pup.
Sadie and Charlie play together while we play cards every time we get together, without fail. I think Charlie would pout if Sadie didn’t come with them!
Think Outside the Box
These are a simple handful of ideas why dogs make great companions and how they can keep you company.
Sadly, we live in a busy world where people do not always have time for one another. But that doesn’t mean we have to go it alone. Maybe it’s time to think outside the box and come up with new ways to include your dog in your life.
Don’t have a dog? Maybe it’s time you did. What’s stopping you?
Leave me your comments below, sharing your stories of dog companionship. What things do you do with your dogs? How has having a dog improved your life? We want to know!
