Jerky is an attractive snack for athletes. For one, its high in protein. But unlike other meat-based foods, jerky doesnt have to be refrigerated.

Unfortunately, depending on how the jerky is made, you probably should not give your dog or puppy beef jerky. Yes, people have used beef jerky as a training treat for many years, but that doesnt necessarily mean that it is healthy or good for dogs. Bad ingredients and spices can be unhealthy and cause digestive issues.

Approved by Dr. Thomas Dwan - Beef jerky purchased from the store is typically bad for you. Such varieties contain high amounts of sodium and harmful preservatives. If you are going to consume beef jerky, we recommend purchasing a variety free of preservatives and produced using organic, grass fed meats.

Eating jerky with MSG doesnt mean its unequivocally bad for you, but MSG is typically coupled with other additives like nitrites and nitrates, and even if the research isnt conclusive yet, its a safer bet to stick with what we know making beef jerky as natural as possible is the healthiest option.

Eating too much beef jerky may lead to a slew of side effects, such as rapid weight gain and increased risk of heart disease. But it may also prevent you from eating other foods with adequate amounts of important nutrients you won't get from beef jerky. Beef jerky nutrition is diverse, supplying protein, iron and vitamin B12, for example.
