I have 6 dogs. About a year ago, the belly skin one of the dogs started turning from pink to black. I took her to my local vet. He said she had developed a hypothyroid condition, and then gave me 5mg Socoxone (could be Socoxove) for her to take on a daily basis. Now, I have 2 more dogs whose belly skin is turning black. It seems rather odd that 3 of 6 dogs have developed a hypothyroid condition at the same general time.

Hyperpigmentation is most often associated with chronic itching. This is called pruritus-induced hyperpigmentation (translation: darkening of the dogs skin caused by chronic itching). You and your veterinarian have to manage the allergies causing the itching and chronically inflamed skin to treat the changes in skin color.

The purple on the stomach and spots on the gums is a very serious indicator of bleeding under the skin. I would not even suggest waiting until morning If this was my dog or a client in our hospital we would suggest getting her to your local animal emergency immediately for blood work.

by Wildmoor on 09 January 2009 - 17:01 One of my dogs skin goes purple on his stomache in reaction to certain meat proteins, lamb/sheep, whereas other protein sources ie chicken/turkey cause him to rip his fur out with 30minutes of eating.

What does it mean if a
dog
has a blue or
purple stomach
? If your
dog
has recently been in an accident or possibly ingested a toxic substance, blue or
purple
discoloration can be caused by bruising or internal hemorrhaging. Otherwise, this could be a condition called cutaneous hyperpigmentation.

If bacterial infection is the reason for the purplish dark hyperpigmentation, a veterinarian might suggest antibiotics for your canine, which, in turn, should lead to the eventual clearing up of the frustrating discoloration.

Rather then making an accusation as such, why not ask the owner what is the current weight and age of the dog? Strange you would suggest hypothyroidism, which tends to lead to obesity and then criticize the owner for the dog being underweight.

Replied on 04/19/2011 This dark skin discoloration in the belly and groin area is a classic pattern of skin change seen in dogs that have chronic skin irritation. Likely your dog has skin allergies or another condition leading to the discoloration. Sometimes this same change can be seen with hormonal imbalances as well.
