Old dog urine stains are more difficult to remove because they've had time to set.

Clean an old urine stain with a wet vacuum then spray the area thoroughly with a cleaning product that neutralizes pet odors.

You can also use your own mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide and two parts water.

Flag. If you make the mistake of just trying different Febreze scents to deal with tough pet odors, you'll just end up hating the mixture of dog urine and perfume. You need products that actually attack and break down the source of the odor on an organic level. First, make sure the affected areas are clean.

Odor-eating sprays like Febreze can help a bit, but because they just mask the smell, they are not a permanent solution. Worse, they do not remove urine stains. Even better, the same products will work well on human, cat, or dog urine—all mammal urine is made up of uric acid crystals. Click to see full answer.

It turns out, Febreze really does "trap" the unpleasant smells by deploying cage-like chemical compounds called cyclodextrins. The centers of the funnel-shaped cyclodextrins are extremely hydrophobic, which means they attract other hydrophobic molecules, including those that are responsible for most aromas.

Once you’ve blotted up the urine, mix 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of dishwashing liquid, 2 cups (470 mL) of cold water, and 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of vinegar together in a small bowl and stir to combine them. The vinegar will help break down the uric acid that contributes to the urine smell.
