Diarrhea isn’t necessarily caused by grain-free food. In fact, in the long run, grain-free should help your dog have consistent, healthy bowel movements. With any new food introduction, your dog, unfortunately, may experience some side effects. These can vary greatly, but they include potentially uncomfortable changes in their digestion.

I’ve had lotsa dogs (we always seem to have three!!) and any dog that had diarrhea wasn’t due to the food being grainfree (I have only fed grainfree except for one dog for a short time). I also feed high quality foods; maybe they didn’t have as much fiber as what others have fed (Annamaet, Farmina, Dr Tim’s, Natures Variety Instinct, Acaca Ranchlands or Grasslands were what I fed most recently.

Grain free foods are very rich and some dogs with more sensitive tummies have a hard time handling the richness of the foods, causing diarrhea and in some cases vomiting after eating. There are a lot of ways to reduce the chances of this happening, though, and you shouldn't let it scare you away from going grain free.

Far and away the most common cause of diarrhoea in dogs is wheat gluten (most dry food, dog treats, bread, pasta, biscuits, etc). But there are a number of other causes too. If your dog is suffering recurring diarrhoea then it’s likely you’re making some simple mistakes diet-wise. The first he’s likely to be dry fed.

Cons: Not all recipes are grain-free, main source of fat is plant-based (canola oil) If your dog suffers from a sensitive stomach and problems with gas or diarrhea, switching him to one of the formulas reviewed above is a step in the right direction!

It’s not entirely accurate to say grain-free foods are the cause of DCM. This would imply that grain-filled foods are a better choice. But grains and starches are all associated with gut dysbiosis, obesity, chronic inflammation and more. The real problem is the use of plant-based protein to replace animal protein.

In some cases, it may not be the actual switching of the dog food that causes the diarrhea, vomiting, gassiness, and upset stomach, but the new food itself. Dogs, just like humans, can have food allergies and sensitives. Maybe the new dog food contains an ingredients which your pup cannot handle.
