As we continue to explore the question of “do Labradors smell?”, it is also important to remember that there are different kinds of Labrador-smell. Just like there are different kinds of people-smell. And, if your friend who owns a Lab says, “my Labrador smells,” this may mean his Lab just rolled in something and smells awful.

Regular grooming will help lessen the dog smell in your home as, essentially, you’re cutting the odor off at its source, before it manages to permeate your house. Regular bathing is especially important for keeping odors at bay. However, bathing too often can interfere with your dog’s natural oils and cause skin complaints.

Many factors can contribute to dry and itchy skin on your black Lab. Some causes are environmental while others can be related to grooming. While uncomfortable, Labrador puppy itching can easily be treated from home and does not require a visit to the veterinarian unless the Labrador itchy skin continues following at-home treatments.

Your dog has two anal glands, near the anal opening, at 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock. The glands can empty when your dog poops, or when he’s stressed. When the glands express, they can create a very sudden, unpleasant change in your dog’s odor. So when dogs sniff each other’s butts, it’s like checking a human passport!

Harley my black lab is now 13 1/2 years old. A terrific dog and great companion!! He’s had one instance with an oral melanoma growth. Working closely with my veterinarian my Labrador is still going. I cannot stress enough the importance of a regular morning and evening walks, and cooking batches of food for three to four day supply.
